Want to decorate your window with a blind or a shade, but you don't know which one would work best? It all depends on your needs and the room in which you want to decorate with window coverings. Learn more about the characteristics of the different types of blinds and window shades and as well as their different benefits.

Blinds

Blinds are distinguished because they are equipped with a control mechanism that allows the slats to be opened and closed to let in the desired amount of light and also to obtain the desired degree of privacy.

Some blinds open horizontally while others open vertically. Vertical blinds are generally made of pvc or fabric and are very suitable for large windows and especially patio doors. Venetian blinds, commonly known as horizontal blinds, are made of wood or faux wood and are offered in different models (smooth slats, textured, pre-printed patterns, linden slats). Made to measure they are ideal in rectangular and square windows.

Shades

Shades are made of fabric, pvc, acrylic or a mixture of pvc and acrylic. There are canvases on rolls (roller shades), sheer shades made of fabric cells and zebra shades. These shades work well in long or large windows.

Roller shades consist of a single piece of fabric rolled onto a cylinder. To control the opening and closing, just pull the cord or chain. Several new opening mechanisms are now available that are a safer option for homes with children, such as motorized and cordless systems.

Translucent shades, or decorative shades, let in light but block direct sunlight. They do not allow you to maintain the view to the outside but do give you some privacy. They are offered in a variety of colors, patterns and textures.

Blackout roller shades are ideal for bedrooms, home theatres, and areas requiring complete darkness. These shades, generally made of vinyl or PVC, give you total privacy and darkness. They block 100% of the light and the sun's rays. Often used with light blockers (small piece of plastic apposed on the side of the window) they are then even more effective.

Solar shades let in light while reducing heat and direct sunlight. They are therefore ideal in rooms that are very exposed to the sun. This fabric allows you to maintain the view to the outside and offers privacy during the day but at night it allows more visibility from outside. If nighttime privacy is a priority, it is better to choose a translucent or a blackout shade.

The sheer shades consist of horizontal translucent fabric cells. The operation of this fabric resembles the operation of horizontal blinds. To filter the light you just have to adjust the bands by pulling on the chain. Sheer shades have the advantage of being as elegant as curtains with all the control that a blind offers.

Zebra shades, also known as zebra blinds, are alternating bands of translucent and solids fabrics. This unique popular product is at the high of modernity and allows for a wide range of control over the light and privacy in a room.
